My Soul Rejoices

In today's gospel we see the perfect humility of Mary. Her "Magnificat" is in response to Elizabeth's praise: “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb...Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:42-45)

Mary's response is: "my soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord." She knows that all the graces and favors she has received come from God and are a complete gift. But Mary also displays true humility by not downplaying her special role. She acknowledges that: "from now on will all ages call me blessed."

Thanking and praising God whenever we receive a blessing is a great habit to get into. It reminds us that all good things come from Him and can help us learn to depend on Him in every circumstance of our lives. One of my friends has the beautiful practice of praying the Magnificat whenever something good happens to her. This is something we all might want to adopt!
