Freedom to Be Brave

In today's gospel, we see what happens when Zechariah learns to trust in God and follow His will, no matter what others think. When the Angel told Zechariah that he and Elizabeth would have a son in their old age, he doubted and was made mute as a result. Zechariah's voice was restored after John was born. It was revealed that they should call their son John. At the time, it was traditional to name children after a family member and others protested that there was no John in the family. However, Zechariah had learned what happens when we let fear keep us from trusting that God knows best. He courageously proclaimed: “John is his name,” and "Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God." This is the freedom that comes from trusting God and not being concerned about the opinions of others!
