Dear friend in Christ,
Yes! Thanks so much for asking this question. Catholics should NEVER read horoscopes (or have anything to do with psychics, fortune tellers, mediums, séances, astrology, tarot cards, spells or magic of any kind). They may seem harmless but there’s nothing fun about them. Here’s why.
It’s normal and natural to want to know what will happen in the future. It’s part of being human. Believing in God requires faith. Faith is trusting without proof, especially trusting that God will take care of us in the future. Things like horoscopes try to take a shortcut to get certainty.
The Church teaches in the Catechism:
“All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to ‘unveil’ the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone” (CCC 2116).
Essentially, all astrological practices are an attempt to be God. So it not only violates the First Commandment, it’s also a denial of our free will and our human nature. Any attempt to be God defies our identity as creatures and makes us like Lucifer and the demons – whose pride made they think they could be God.
This is why occult practices like horoscopes, tarot cards, fortune tellers, etc. FREQUENTLY lead to demonic influences occurring in one’s life, home and family.
EVERY SINGLE TIME a person has called to request help for strange and unsettling things happening in their home, the answer has come back – “Yeah, actually I did see a psychic a few weeks ago. Hmmm, actually we do have a dream catcher over our bed. Yes, we have been using energy crystals in the house.” Every single time.
You can avoid all this! It’s so easy! Throw out all that stuff. Avoid every type of horoscope and occult practice. Trust in the Living God who loves you and you will have no problems. If you’ve been involved with that stuff in the past, come to Confession and experience true freedom.
If you are thinking right now, “well, I don’t need to give it up, I only do it for fun” ask yourself – what is my attachment to it? If it’s just for fun, it should be easy to discard. Why don’t you want to let it go? One can see how the forces of darkness want us to form attachments to evil things under the guise of “fun.” Would we play in a playground that had broken glass all over it, even if it’s just for fun? If you need help breaking an attachment like this, come to Confession.
St. Michael the Archangel, Prince of the Heavenly Host, pray for us.
